6 Drawing Tips for Beginners

Are you looking to start sketching on a consistent basis? Are you passionate about it and want to enhance your skill set? Well you have come to the right place, here is a beginner’s guide to drawing for you to get started.

1. Know Your Tools

You can never master your skill unless you possess the right tools to achieve that perfection. The same concept applies to something as trivial as artistry. Investing in some good quality artist grade pencils will add just the right amount of detail to your artwork. We recommend stocking up on 3 different grades such as HB, 2-B and 6-8B. Other than drawing utensils, adding a graphite eraser and investing in high quality paper sketchbooks can take your drawing skills up a notch.

2. Start Slow

As you are slowly upgrading your drawing skills, it’s crucial that you start your journey by working around large and simpler shapes and patterns, doing SC-87    easy drawings step by step without getting too much into the smaller intricacies. As a beginner, it is recommended that once you start working on an artwork, be it a landscape, a photograph or a live sketch, it’s good to visualize your subject as simpler patterns and shapes and then move on to adding further details and textures.

3. Know How to Work Around Your Tools

As an artist, you must be able to distinguish how to hold your pencil for sketching verses writing. It is only but natural to get stuck at this important step. We are programmed for using our pencils in a neat way for writing, as compared to making subtle strokes and shades when we are sketching away. There is no right or wrong way to go about it. Just keep in mind that you will have to change positions frequently, and hold your pencil loosely for achieving those light blended strokes. Ideally, you should move your entire arm during sketching and not just your wrist.

4. Do Not Strive for Perfection

Let’s face it! Even if you did draw really well, you might have to erase your hard work to have a fresh start. Don’t fall in love with the lines you sketched, or the shapes you drew so intricately. Sometimes taking a deep breath, and erasing a few parts of your sketch is absolutely vital to make it more visually appealing.

5. Observation Is Key

To all the beginners out there, one high yield tip that I would like to put forward is for you to start with reference pictures and photographs in the initial days. Once your skills reach a certain level of perfection, you can try live sketching.

6. Make It a Habit

Practice, practice and practice! Until it becomes your second nature! These tips will do nothing for you unless you take out a bit of time every now and then to practice and enhance your new learnt drawing skills.

In the end, it’s not about perfection or the detail! It’s about how much effort and soul you invested in each of your pieces. Begin with these easy drawings step by step tips and explore a whole new world of art.
